GOLF 1970-71

By Dr. J. Wheaton

The school team (J. Mellor 5A and M. Tinsley 1C) finished well down the field with a return of 178 in the London Schools' Golf Competition at Fulwell in July.

Mellor started strongly with an outward half of 39, faltering slightly on the back nine. His round of 83 contained many notable shots such as a five iron over the trees to the second green after a pushed tee shot had obscured his approach at this dog-leg hole and a magnificently struck three wood at the exacting 575 yards 17th, enabling him to get a par 5. Only short putts that slid by at the 14th and 16th and an encounter with a tree on the 18th fairway prevented him from breaking 80.

Tinsley, only a first year in a tournament dominated by sixth formers, performed well and should have gained valuable experience for future appearances.

The school is fortunate to have two other young golfers - J. Arthur 5A and D. Roxborough 5C - who will be challenging for a place in the team, and these four should provide the school with a strong side in the next two years.
