70 Club

R. G. Clayton

Few people can be unaware of the existence of 70 Club if only because it attracts a large number of girls from St. Mary's into the school on Thursdays at lunch time.

The purpose of the club is to challenge and encourage people to think about life and to face up to some of the various problems we meet and particularly to show what the Christian Gospel has to say.

The attendances this year have been good, ranging from a mere 15 on one occasion to 80 and more on another. Why, you may ask, if you have never been yourself, have all these people come to 70 club, many of them regularly? The answer is surely twofold: variety and profit. There has been something to suit all but the most jaded of tastes and those who have come have been generally enriched by the experience.

The programme this year has been very diverse, including a Christian Aid film, a talk by a brain surgeon, a discussion on "Protest'', a record session, a talk on Buddhism and a short series of study discussions on the “Message of Christianity" to name but a few.

During the year we have tried holding a few meetings after school but these were generally less well attended than those at lunch-time. A pity most people wish to dash away at 3.30, since the half-hour in the middle of the day is always too brief. Nevertheless it has been decided to hold a few of next year's meetings at 3.45 on Fridays

Next year's committee is already at work preparing a programme just as varied as this year's and their hope is that many more people in both schools will attend, participate in and enjoy the meetings.

See you on Thursdays 1.30 or Fridays 3.45.
