SOME MUSICAL NOTES

THE School has been fortunate in finding a number of promising young musicians among its founder members, Their talent has been put to good use not only in the public functions which have been described elsewhere, but also in the weekly recitals given to the School on Tuesday mornings. In these, the Head Master and Mrs. Clark have been assisted on different occasions by Hymas, Hyde and Saunders (piano), and by O'Brien (violin).

A School Choir was formed in the Autumn Term, and has been active throughout the year. The somewhat larger task of forming a School Orchestra has begun under the guidance of the Head Master. A class of string players and two would be trumpeters are already in action, and we hope to widen Our scope still further next year.

THE CHESS CLUB

The early activities of the Chess Club have been concerned with practice games and a Ladder Competition. Interest in the "Game of Kings" is keen, and a number of promising young players have emerged. During the Spring Term, Mr. James gave a simultaneous display against the Second Forms. The Club looks forward to next year, when it is hoped that both School and House Matches will be played.

THE ST. NICHOLAS MODEL RAILWAY CLUB

THE St. Nicholas Model Railway Club holds its meetings on Thursday evenings. The subscription of 6d. a week entitles members to enjoy all facilities the Club offers. There is a free testing service, for example, if a loco. needs adjusting. The work will be carried out by an experienced adjuster.

It is hoped to expand the Club considerably during the Summer Term. In this connection, we hope to buy a "Wrenn" track when funds are sufficient.

THE MAGIC CLUB

THE Magic Club was formed to provide opportunities for boys interested in conjuring to perform before other people. It is required of each member that he present one trick every fortnight. Many members have conjuring sets, but this does not prevent their inventing some baffling and entertaining piece of their own.

We hope to give a brief performance at the next School Concert and under Mr. Armstrong's guidance reach a really high standard of conjuring.

PRINTING CLUB

A START has been made in forming a Printing Club. This year has been a training year, and we now have a nucleus of boys who are proficient type setters and operators of the machine. It is intended that greater numbers of boys will be brought into the Club to gain some knowledge of printing as a craft.

OIL PAINTING CLUB

THIS Club has had a most successful start. The first two terms produced some really first-class paintings, showing great divergence of style and originality. The work of the members was included in the North-West Middlesex Arts and Crafts Exhibition, and certainly held its own with anything else displayed. Unfortunately, the materials ran out, so that there was no activity during the Summer Term. But next September will see new members, and a fresh start.

TENNIS CLUB

FORTY boys from the second forms attend a tennis coaching session once a week and on three other evenings our one hard court is available to them.

We hope to have another tennis court by next season which will enable members to practise more frequently. Eventually it should be possible to arrange a fixture list for one or two teams of senior boys.

GYM CLUB

AT the first meeting of the Gym Club over ninety boys were present. Unfortunately all these boys could not be catered for, and forty-five were selected to attend once a week during the Spring Term.

Some boys achieved a good standard of vaulting, but the general standard, particularly of agilities, was low. However, a good deal of elementary work was covered which should form a basis for the future.

Next year it will be possible for the Gym Club to meet during both Christmas and Spring Terms. We look forward to a rapid improvement in gymnastics.
