ATHLETICS 1960

By VA Kerton, Mr P Cahill

INTER-SCHOOL MATCHES

ALL the Athletic teams enjoyed a pleasant and successful season. The senior team remained unbeaten throughout, despite strong opposition from eleven schools, and now must surely be one of the strongest school teams in the area.

Individually, Harris and Butterfield could nearly always he relied upon for maximum points in their field events, whilst on the track the same could be said of Bulgin, Dothie and Kerton. In the sprints Spragg, Piears and Speller were consistent if not spectacular.

At the inauguration of the St. Nicholas Trophy, our own captain was put in the embarrassing position of having to collect the shield. Bulgin, Butterfield, Dothie, Kerton, Harris, Piears and Spragg were awarded colours.

The Middle and Junior teams did not enjoy the same success, but some very creditable improvements were achieved, the names of Bolsover, Wallis, Sherrington, Rogers, Burrells and Knott springing to mind for consistently good performances, and junior colours were awarded to the latter two boys.

Finally, the Athletics Club would like to thank the masters and boys who so readily gave up their time to officiate at the school matches. This voluntary support undoubtedly helps to make these summer evenings so enjoyable, and fosters the true Athletic spirit which abounds on these occasions.

In the final meeting at Chiswick, the highlight of the afternoon from the school's point of view was Dothie's magnificent win in the senior 880 yards. In so doing, he set a new meeting record of 1 min. 56.6 secs., eclipsing a time which was thought to be well-nigh invincible by a whole second. The other competitors all performed well and the school tied for fourth place in the senior group.
