ATHLETICS 1964

By Anon

The Athletics team, after three very good seasons during which time only one inter-schools match was lost, had its inevitable 'lean year'.

All the boys who had been regular points-scorers during that time left en bloc, and few ready replacements were available. The team was weak even in the middle-distances, its traditional strength, although Wintle's rapid improvement compensated for this to some extent by the end of the season. Burrells, who was an efficient and enthusiastic captain, Kohl and Coles did their best to cover up the fact that the School still lacks a genuine sprinter, and these three often gained valuable points in the jumps and the relay.

T. Burrells and N. Kohl were awarded School Colours.

The Under 17 team under R. Green enjoyed an unbeaten season, defeating nine schools in all and being held only by R.G.S. High Wycombe: Green himself (Middle Distance), Westray (Discus), Miller and Cassidy (Sprints), Creak (Triple Jump), Jones (Shot) and Day (High Jump and 440 yards) were particularly consistent and a normal improvement by these boys should ensure the future of School athletics for two or three years to come.

The Junior team, although it won eight of its eleven matches, depended largely on G. Curd, who remained unbeaten in both sprinting and in javelin throwing throughout. He was supported well by D. Veitch (Middle-Distance), J. Webb (Hurdles), T. Wooding (Shot) and C. Downing (440 yards) and Junior Colours were awarded to these five boys.

The School retained the Group Trophy, again from Harrow County. Because of the new age groups no comparisons with previous years are possible, but a record number of the School's competitors, twenty-two, won their way through to the finals meeting by being placed first or second in their competitions, and the Seniors and Minors were placed second.

Highlights were Green's tenacious win in the Middle 880 yards, Westray's victory in the Middle Discus and Curd's "double first".
