ATHLETICS 1976

By Mr. A. Kerr

SENIOR ATHLETICS

Our Seniors have again had a successful season. In our own school matches they easily defeated Gunnersbury, Watford, Isleworth and Latymer Upper. And in the St Nicholas Shield, the team came second to a strong Haberdashers' Aske's side.

In the Borough Athletic Championships the team came first, with four Borough Champions: P. Darrell in the Long Jump and 110 metres Hurdles (the latter in a record time of 15.7 secs); N. Newton in the 5000 metres; R. Burdett in the 800 metres and I. Rice in the Discus.

The team was second in the 1913 North West Group Meeting, and, ably supported by the Minor, Junior and Intermediate athletes, all of whom won their sections, the school won the overall Trophy for the fourteenth consecutive time.

The Seniors went on to win their section in the 1913 Finals Meeting, and so won the Bowles Cup. The School came second in this Overall Competition (i.e. Minor, Junior, Intermediate and Senior combined).

Thanks naturally go to all athletes, but the following performed well: P. Darrell, C. Nash, D. Putt, R. Burdett, N. Jones, C. Orlans, N. Thomson, I. Rice, N. Newton and P. Ettinger.

Half-colours were awarded to P. Ettinger and I. Rice.

INTERMEDIATE ATHLETICS

This team had an excellent season, and this was especially creditable as a number of its members were still in the fourth year and have another year of competition at this level.

In our own school matches, the team beat Gunnersbury, Watford, Isleworth, Latymer Upper and Northwood.

A list of the team's results indicates how much promise it has:

1st in the Sherrington Trophy
1st in the Henderson Trophy
1st in the Borough Championships
1st in the 1913 North West Group Meeting

The following were Borough Champions: P. Wignall in the 100 metres Hurdles; C. Cornwall in the 3000 metres; G. Hills in the Pole Vault; M. Johnson in the Steeplechase; D. Darrell in the 400 metres and P. Wignall, S. Pound, R. Britton and D. Darrell in the Relay.

The few fifth formers served the team well: D. Darrell had another good season and started to run well over 400 metres. He also did well in being presented with the best Track Award in the Senior St Nicholas Shield when he ran the 400 metres Hurdles in 60.4 seconds. P. Wignall had an excellent season over 100 metres Hurdles and should do well over the senior distance. He was also presented with the trophy for the most improved athlete of the year. N: Hicks and R. Britton competed well in the Long Jump; A. Paul, G. Hills, W. Jackson, D. Yuill, M. Stephens, Bennett, J. Andrews, L. Talbott, R. De Beger and C. Jennings all worked well.

The Fourth Formers would be too numerous to mention individually, but of special note were S. Pound for his sprinting, R. Gross for his Triple Jumping; M. Jackson in the Steeplechase; P. Pinsent in the Shot; M. Chippendale in the Hurdles and Triple Jumping; C. Cornwall in the 3000 metres, and B. Mason in the Javelin. The latter having thrown over 45 metres on Sports Day.

JUNIOR ATHLETICS

This team won all but one of the competitions entered.

It beat Gunnersbury, Watford, Northwood, Isleworth, and Latymer Upper, and won its age groups in the Sherrington Trophy, and won the Borough Championships and the North West Group Meeting.

The following were Borough Champions: M. Thomas in the Pole Vault, M. Day in the Discus, R. Shammas in the Triple Jump, R. Mount in the 800 metres, M. Simmons in the 400 metres, and P. Taylor in the High Jump.

The six Borough Champions all worked very well, M. Thomas having set a school record in the Pole Vault. Pullem deserves mention for some excellent shot putting nearing the school record.

Mention should also be made of J. Hughes, a second year boy competing at third year level in the 100 metres, 200 metres and Long Jump. A. Shipperley ran well, particularly towards the end of the season. K. Jungreuthmayer and M. Porterfield high-jumped well on occasions.

Junior Colours were awarded to: R. Shammas, M. Simmons, R. Mount, P. Taylor, M. Thomas, D. Pullem and M. Day.

FIRST YEAR ATHLETICS

The school team did well to come third in the Borough Championships. Both Chung, in the Long Jump and Mitchell in the 1500 metres, were Borough Champions. These boys also set the school records during the season; Chung running the 200 metres in 27.1 seconds, and Mitchell running the 800 metres in 2 minutes, 25.9 seconds, and the 1500 metres in 5 minutes 0.5 seconds.

The team came first in their group of the 1913 North West Group Meeting, and beat Latymer Upper and Isleworth in a school match.

The 1st year Inter Form Athletics Competition resulted in the following points and positions:

1st 1B 335 pts.
2nd 1C 328 pts.
3rd 1A 299 pts.
