BADMINTON REPORT 1969

By Mr P. J. Cahill

The School had its best-ever year, losing only one match, to Watford G.S., and finishing runners-up in the West London Schools' Badminton League. This was not only a measure of our strength compared with other local schools, the standard of Badminton played by the School team has never been higher.

The Captain, Smith, is now a very good all-round player, his only serious weakness being a badly bent arm in his shots overhead. Summerhayes continues to improve and will, I feel, be a better player now that he is no longer the junior partner to the Captain, O'Neill. Rawnsley and Howard all came to the competitive game late and developed bad faults of technique which it will be hard to eradicate; they did, however, work hard at the tactics of the game and were very competent by the end of the season. The wily Parish continued to push and flick his opponents into error whilst, by contrast, T. Smith, the youngest member of the team, is extremely fast about the court and already has a devastating round-the-bend smash in his armoury.

During the season, a regular sixth-form badminton evening was held in conjunction with St. Mary's, which proved to be most successful, and two very enjoyable matches were held against the Parents' Association.
