Tennis (1962)

TENNIS, 1962

By S. Lee

After its initial success in 1961, the Tennis Club resumed in the Summer term of 1962. Once again it had to be held at St. Mary's, since, although the lines had been marked out in our playground and the safety nets erected, the nets themselves had not then arrived. The Club would like to place on record its gratitude to the Headmistress and Games Staff of our sister school for their generosity in this respect.

This year, membership was extended to the lower school; thus, on Tuesday evenings the Club was open to fifth and sixth formers, while on Thursdays second, third and fourth year boys were able to use the courts.

Two matches against other schools were arranged; however, only one was played, the School team beating Bishopshalt by eight matches to one. The match against Headstone School was raised off. As last year, a singles tournament was arranged, attracting nearly fifty entries, from whom D. Rooke and R. Art emerged as finalists. D. Rooke proved a worthy champion by winning 6-1, 6-2.

Towards the end of term, St. Mary's arranged a "Tea-dance, tennis-party". This took the form of an early evening dance with tennis for those with surplus energy. As usual the girls provided delicious food, and in all the evening was a grand success.

Now the founder of the Club, Mr. Owen, has left us for the West Country. We thank him for his efforts on our behalf and assure him, they will not go to waste in the summers to come.
