Chess Report 1971

By Mr Mark Fountain

The Chess Club has been reasonably popular this year, having in the region of a hundred members. A school individual competition was run and was won by Parish of the M.VI.

For the first time St. Nicholas played in some school chess competitions. After nine matches the team looked like becoming Hillingdon Borough Champions, but eventually had to be satisfied with second place. The school was defeated by Harrow County in the Sunday Times' Nationwide Competition. Regular team members include Parish, Breibart, Jolliffe, Grice, Kirkby, Dickens and Taffel.

The House Competition was won by Kings, with Bec second and Kevere and Abbots equal third.

Finally, four members of the team entered the London Championship at Christmas and several entered the Middlesex Championships at the end of the summer holidays. The youthful yet growing experience of the team bodes well for the future.
