Chess 1974

By Mr Mark Fountain

This report is similar to the last. The team won the Hillingdon Schools' Shield for the third successive year, winning nine and drawing one of their ten games. In the national 'Sunday Times' competition we reached the semi-final of our zone before being beaten by Ealing Grammar. It is unfortunate that the Hillingdon competition is relatively weak as it gives the team insufficient opportunities for improvement, and we are unlikely to do much better nationally until we are able to play strong sides regularly.

Several young players have improved, however, and Mackie, Mason and Runagall played for the county at Under 14 level, and Taffel continues to do well, coming second in the Middlesex Under 18 championships. My thanks also to Dickins, Woodall, Shapiro, Kirkby, France and Harman who played regularly for the School this year.
