SCHOOL GAMES 1956

IN this our first season we fielded two teams, one from each year. Fixtures were arranged with six six other schools, but because of hard frosts half of these had to be cancelled.

Each of these games was played against a team with a year's more experience than that of our boys, and this proved the deciding factor. An early try against Rickmansworth Grammar School in our first game promised well, but the defence eventually wilted under pressure and all the life and determination left our team. A large score was inevitable. It is, however, lair. to say that the Rickmansworth Grammar School team had an unusually high standard of play.

On a very wet day against Harrow County School our XV won convincingly. They adapted themselves well to the conditions and never let Harrow settle down to their normal game.

Watford had scored 14 points with no reply by half-time and another telling defeat seemed probable. However, a very good recovery in the second half produced a try and a goal and at no-side Watford were being hard pressed to prevent further tries. This game showed what some determination can do.

B. P. Maddams, the captain, and B. J. Lockyear, played consistently well and A. Gibbs improved considerably at scrum half.

The XV played fairly well against Rickmansworth Grammar School in the first match but lacked real teamwork. As a result both tries came from breakaways.

Against an older, much drilled side from Hayes County Grammar School, the team acquitted themselves admirably and did well not to be beaten by an even greater margin. K. Gathergood, the captain, and M. Baker both showed promise.
