School Building Project 06
Selected Notes

From the Parents' Association notes, 1959-60 by R. E. Hudson (Chairman)

It was decided to devote all our resources this year to the Building Fund, to provide a Common Room, which, when erected, will have many uses and act as a meeting place for a future Old Boys' Association. It is an ambitious project but not too ambitious for a school of St. Nicholas's standing.

From the Parents' Association notes, 1960-61 by R. E. Hudson (Chairman)

THE foundation upon which the Association rests was well and truly laid by the Parents, who formed it; and we have been most fortunate in each successive year, in the enthusiasm of new members who have joined our ranks. In its short life the Association has been able to make available to the school over £1,750. In addition, it was decided just over twelve months ago to provide a Junior Common Room, to be used also for social functions and the entertainment of visiting teams. A project costing £5,500 was no small undertaking for a young association, and although the appeal made to all parents for gifts and loans produced fewer than 150 replies, representing some £500, the generous assistance of four or five parents and friends, together with the profits of the 1960 and 1961 St. Nicholas Fairs, has enabled us to go ahead, and it is expected that the building will soon be in use. The debt we have to face will be over £3,000, but I am sure that, with the continued enthusiasm of parents, this will be liquidated within the next few years.

Our thanks are due especially to Mr. J. N. Wall, A.R.I.B.A., who has designed and supervised the construction of the building, and to Mr. Sharpe and Mr. Wakeling, who have also given freely of their time and professional advice; nor must we forget the members of the Executive Committee, who have had to attend so many meetings.

From the Headmaster's Notes written in March 1962

For the building project, last year was mainly one of frustrations, but by July all difficulties in the planning had been overcome and a contract was placed with Messrs. Panel-Lastik to erect a building in red cedar approximately seventy feet by thirty-two feet. As I write these lines in March it is nearing completion.

From the Parents' Association notes, 1963-64 by R. W. Deacon (Chairman)

The greatest achievement, which reflects the earnest hard work. of previous committees and parents, was the provision of the Junior Common Room, officially opened on July 6th, 1963 by Mr. Richard Sharp the Rugby International and Captain of England. Although it was one of the most inclement days of the year, the opening was so well attended that some of the parents had to remain standing. during the ceremony.

A permanent feature of the Junior Common Room in the form of a mural and cine screen reminded us of Mr. Brian Tilbrook. He worked untiringly to raise funds for the J.C.R. before leaving for Malaya, and has been greatly missed. We wish him every success and extend our best wishes on his marriage.

The debt for this building has been considerably reduced but continued enthusiasm on the part of the Parents is necessary to liquidate the deficit completely.
