ST. NICHOLAS GRAMMAR SCHOOL

OLD BOYS' ASSOCIATION (1963-64)

President: THE HEADMASTER
Chairman: R. J. FINER (1955-59)
Secretary: W. G. MILLER (1955-62)

THE Association has held several very successful social events during the last year; the New Year dance in the Junior Common Room--music provided by the Vostocks under the direction of Ian Few-was especially well attended, and everyone seemed to enjoy dancing to the Ruislip-Northwood Sound. In June there was a coach trip to Hastings, though it seems doubtful whether history students would have derived much benefit from it. Those responsible for arranging the social programme announce with pride that the first reunion dinner will take place shortly at a local hostelry.

We have made modest, but nevertheless encouraging, progress in sport. The match against the School had to be cancelled owing to frost and fog--the prospect of playing rugby on a cement surface without being able to see the other players discouraged even our enthusiasts. However, we hope to do well in the coming Sevens, particularly as we reached the semi-finals of the Old Gaytonians' Sevens last season. (Incidentally, we're very grateful to the Old Gaytonians for allowing us to take part.) We were also pleased with our performance against University College Hospital in a match arranged through the good offices of Mick Baker. To sum up, the Association is looking forward to running a regular XV and XI, and both should be able to give a good account of themselves.

Although the teams still play in "Saints" colours, members of the Association will soon have their own tie at any rate. An official Old Boys' tie has now been approved, after marathon discussion in Committee, and it should be on sale by April (1964!).

The Senior Treasurer wishes to remind members that the annual subscription of ten shillings should be sent to him at the School.

The Secretary would like to hear news from members that may he of general interest. He records the following items that have already come to his notice:

J. Bulgin, A. Harris, P. Lawson, M. Baker, and R. Williams are playing rugby regularly for their Universities: D. Cumming has been a member of the Durham University drama group that gave performances during the Edinburgh Festival: D. Shoebridge and M. Dagnall are doing well in the Merchant Navy: J. Masefield and R. Green have been equally successful in the Royal Air Force; and D. Clive has done remarkably well at Imperial College, as the Headmaster's Notes record.

St. NICHOLAS OLD BOYS v UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL
Played at Edgware on 18th December, 1963.

This was the first match in which the Old Boys had played together since leaving the school, but from the kick-off it was evident that the understanding between them was still there. The game was played at a fast pace throughout, and all credit must go to those of the team who are not regular players, for they, especially, played magnificently. The Old Boys outplayed their opponents in all quarters of the game, and the points soon mounted up. The try scorers were Harris, Edwards, Bulgin, and Snook, and others worthy of mention are Lockyear at full-back, Sanderson at fly-half, and Gathergood at wing-forward, who ably led his side to a well-deserved victory by 18 points to 0.

Old Boys' XV: S. Lockyear, R. Wormald, C. Snook, J. Bulgin, A. Gilbert, C. Sanderson, D. Morgan, I. Lewis, J. Bonner, R. Bolsover, C. Edwards, P. Lawson, D. Thursfield, A. Harris, K. Gathergood (captain).
