ST. NICHOLAS GRAMMAR SCHOOL PARENTS' ASSOCIATION

OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE, 1955-56

President THE HEAD MASTER
Vice-President S. E. HARRIS
Hon. Treasurer T. C. STODDART
Hon. Secretaries R. W. SHOOBRIDGE (Parents), P. H. J. H. GOSDEN (School)

THE Head Master, as President of this Association, has asked me to give some account of its activities during the past year and to remind you of its aim "to foster co-operation between the School and the home, and to develop an interest in education generally."

In this, the first issue of the School Magazine, I should like to take the opportunity of extending a welcome to all parents of boys about to join the School in September, and to ask for their support for the Association. I should also like to ask the minority of parents of boys already at the School who have so far not enrolled to join now so that all parents are members.

The idea of a Parents' Association was originally put forward when the Head Master held his first parents' meeting, and with his helpful co-operation a voluntary committee prepared rules which were subsequently endorsed at a general meeting. Officers and committee were then elected to serve until the Annual General Meeting in October this year.

The first organised event was a Social Evening held on 14th March, when an opportunity was given to all parents to meet each other and to join in games and dancing. This was generally agreed to be a most successful and enjoyable occasion and it is intended to hold another similar event in the near future when new members will be particularly welcome.

In addition to the Social we held a very instructive and entertaining Brains Trust on 1st June, when a panel of experts answered questions on education.

At the time of writing, the Social Sub-Committee is very busy organising a Bring and Buy Sale, due to be held on 14th July, and it is hoped that this will raise some of the funds we badly need to provide equipment which this new School has not yet been able to acquire. Funds are being raised in various ways with this object in view, and it is hoped, in time, to augment the School Library, to provide sports equipment, and even to assist in the formation of a School Orchestra by providing musical instruments, when sufficient funds become available. An even more ambitious project, which may ultimately be within our power to initiate, is a Swimming Pool.

As you will see, with these and other objectives in mind, it is important that our Association is 100 per cent strong in membership, and that all members give their full support to its activities so that we can give our boys the maximum help possible during their period at school.

S. E. HARRIS,
Vice-President.
