THE ST. NICHOLAS PARENTS' ASSOCIATION – 1959-60

By R. E. HUDSON (Chairman)

Parents' Association

ST. NICHOLAS GRAMMAR SCHOOL

President Chairman
THE HEADMASTER R. E. HUDSON, Esq.

THE 1950/60 year is now drawing to a close and it has proved to be most enjoyable and successful from a social point of view, and in its aims to raise funds to provide facilities not allowed for from official sources.

The social programme began with the Drama section's presentation of the play, Blithe Spirit, to packed houses on November 20th and 21st; they will be producing another play in November of this year. The annual dance, held at "The Headstone Hotel", was, a great success and very well supported. At the end of May a "Car Treasure Hunt" was ably organized by Mr. Ridge and his colleagues, and over eighty cars took part. It proved to be a most enjoyable afternoon and evening although not all members finished the course. Whist Drives, arranged by Mr. Freeman, and "Old Time Dancing", with Mr. Don Smith as dancing master, were run successfully through the winter months. Both these events have already started again this year.

We were most grateful to the Headmaster for arranging the very instructive talk, by four of the senior masters, on the "Crowther Report". This was greatly appreciated by a large audience.

The highlight of the summer was, of course, "St. Nicholas Fair", and the profit of £1,040 far surpassed all expectations. This achievement was made possible by the hard work of many parents and boys, but, in particular, by the tireless efforts and ingenuity of Mr. Tilbrook; and also those of Mr. Freeman, the Fair organiser, and the ladies of the Working Party and Catering Committee. The boys excelled themselves by selling well over 10,000 programmes.

It was decided to devote all our resources this year to the Building Fund, to provide a Common Room, which, when erected, will have many uses and act as a meeting place for a future Old Boys' Association. It is an ambitious project but not too ambitious for a school of St. Nicholas's standing.

Our membership is very good but we should like it to be 100% and should welcome any parents wishing to join the Association.

My term of office as Chairman is nearing its end and I should like to thank the officers and members of the Executive Committee for the wonderful co-operation I have received, which has helped to make the past year so successful. During the year we lost the services of Mrs. Warren (Secretary), Mr. James and Dr. Gosden, and we wish them every success in their new surroundings.
