Speech Day 05 (Oct 1960)

SPEECH DAY 12TH OCTOBER, 1960

By E. F. Cattermole VB

ONCE again, as in previous years, it was found necessary to hold two separate ceremonies on Speech Day, the first in the afternoon for the presentation of prizes and awards to the Junior part of the school while the Senior Speech Day was held in the evening.

It was a great pleasure in the afternoon to welcome Mrs. Watson who was our guest on the occasion and who made the presentation of prizes and trophies to the winners.

We were honoured in the evening by the presence as our guests of honour of Sir Cyril Musgrave, K.C.B., Chairman of the Iron and Steel Board, and Lady Musgrave. Councillor W. Darrell Charles, J.P., Chairman of the Governors of the School, presided at the ceremony.

In his report the Headmaster looked back over a year of worthy achievement and steady progress. He spoke of sound examination. results at O' level and the school's first successes at 'A' level, including the award of two State Scholarships in Science to D. Clive and J. Gubbay at the end of only their sixth year in the school. A thoroughly creditable performance on the playing field and a wide variety of extra-mural activities showed that the school's interests and achievements ranged beyond the formal limits of the curriculum.

There followed a short musical interlude provided by the school orchestra which, under the direction of Mr. Spurgeon, played the St. Anthony Chorale and a Minuet and Rondo by Haydn.

The presentation of awards and trophies was made by Lady Musgrave.

The choir then sang two items: My soul there is a country, by Parry, and Turn back, O Man, by Holst.

We were then privileged to listen to our guest of the evening, Sir Cyril Musgrave. With his words of advice and encouragement to those who would before long be embarking on their chosen careers he mingled wit, humour, and a mature wisdom seasoned by his wide experience in industry and the public service.
