Speech Day 06 (Mar 1962)

SPEECH DAY 20th March, 1962

By Unknown

THE Junior Speech Day was held, as usual, at 2.30 p.m. and the school was once again pleased to welcome Mrs. Watson as the Guest of Honour. The Headmaster reported on another year of achievement and progress. After performances by the school choir and orchestra, Mrs. Watson presented the prizes and trophies, and the proceedings were concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by a member of the school.

The main ceremony of Speech Day took place in the evening when the Guest of Honour was Mr. J. S. Fulton, M.A., Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex. After the proceedings had been formally opened by the Chairman of the Governors, Councillor W. D. Charles, J.P., the School Captain, D. S. R. Morgan, welcomed Mr. Fulton. In his report the Headmaster spoke of the further advancement of the school towards maturity, of an impressive record of examination successes, and of the continuing expansion of the school's extra-curricular activities.

There followed the presentation of the awards and trophies by Mr. Fulton who immediately afterwards gave his Address.

Mr. Fulton spoke of the work of the new University of Sussex, of its aims and educational ideals, and of the principles underlying the arrangement of the various courses offered to students.

During the evening the choir sang two modern part-songs, and two items were played by the school orchestra, one by Brahms and the other by Vaughan Williams.

The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks accorded to Mr. Fulton for presenting the awards and for his address.
